Comments from Paul Martin:
Belvoir Castle is a fantastic venue to host a wedding. Beautifully situated on a hill, the Castle enjoys breathtaking views across the Leicestershire and Lincolnshire countryside.

The present Castle is the fourth to have stood on the site since Norman times, the existing Castle was completed in the early 19th century after previous buildings suffered complete or partial destruction during the Wars of the Roses, the Civil War and a major fire in 1816.

From the elegance of the Elizabeth Saloon and the majesty of the State Dining Room to the delights of the Regents Gallery and the military splendour of the Guard Room, Belvoir possesses one of the most stunning interiors of the period.

Below the terrace of the Castle sloping lawns lead down to the Rose and Statue Gardens which are elegantly laid out round a central fountain. The Statue Collection terraced into the hillside includes work by Caius, Cibber – Sculptor to Charles II.

The Castle also contains a notable collection of furniture, porcelain, silks and tapestries, sculptures and paintings. There are examples of fine French furniture, Italian sculpture alongside paintings by Gainsborough, Reynolds, Holbein and Poussin.

I recently enjoyed the opportunity of photographing a wedding at Belvoir Castle, and was able to utilise stunning situations both indoors and outdoors. The Guard Room is the first room on entering the Castle, with high ceilings and two large open fires. It makes an impressive room for receiving guests and holding receptions. The marriage ceremony took place in this room, and I was able to capture some beautiful non-intusive photographs, as the daylight spilling in to the room was adeqaute for hand held exposures.

Following the marriage ceremony, guests were able to proceed outside for a champagne reception in the Rose Garden nearby. As described above, this is also a stunning situation, and here I was able to capture many beautiful informal compositions of guests mingling with bride & groom, as well as undertaking all the formal group requests. The string quartet provided fitting relaxing music to the situation in the gazebo. We then proceeded to do some more action photographs of bride & groom at various locations inside the Castle.

The State Dining Room, one of the Castle’s most magnificent Rooms with high ceilings, open fires and stunning views across the Lincolnshire countryside, was the setting for the wedding dinner. Here again, I was able to capture many non-intrusive photographs of guests dinning. Later in the evening, a reception party was held for more guests in the Guard room.

Overall, I rate Belvoir Castle, Leicestershire, as a fantastic venue for a wedding ceremony and party, and for stunning wedding photography. It is certainly the most impressive of which I have photographed!. And,… are guaranteed some very impressive and unique photographic memories of your day, provided of course, you are in the hands of a creative photographer!, and, I look forward to photographing future events at Belvoir Castle.
