Comments from Paul Martin:
This foundation is private, and usually access is only on Wednesdays between April 1 and July 31st at 1415h, upon purchase of a ticket (£3) for a guided tour lasting around 90 minutes. The dial (c. 1628) is on the south wall of the great Tudor Hall. It bears Thomas Sutton’s coat of arms and the Charterhouse colour, a vivid purple.

History: The Charterhouse was named after a Carthusian priory that was located on the site from 1371 until the Dissolution. The priory was replaced by a mansion which was later adapted as an almshouse and school. The school moved away in the late 19th century although the almshouse known as Sutton’s Hospital, for older gentlemen still remains.

Archietecture: In 1371 a Carthusian Priory was founded on part of the site for twenty four monks and a dozen lay brothers. The chapel became the church and the Great Cloister was laid out to provide accommodation for the monks. Further buildings were added in the 15th and 16th centuries. A large mansion was built with Great Hall and Great Chamber alongside considerable alterations to the monastic buildings.

I recently enjoyed the occassion of photographing a small wedding blessing in the Charterhouse Chapel. The opportunities for producing creative and memorable photographs at this very unique and historic location was immense. Photo highlights are shown below.

Please note: The Chapel and facilities at Sutton’s Hospital Chapel is not open to the general public for wedding events, other than by special arrangements through connections with the authorities. However, if you ever enjoy the priviledge of having your wedding blessing here, this is real gem of a venue from an historic and photographic perspective. I hope the sample photographs speak for themselves!
