Comments from Paul Martin:
Built in 1251, St. Etheldreda’s is the oldest Roman Catholic church in Britain and was the first pre-Reformation church in Great Britain to be restored to Catholic worship. Built as a private chapel attached to the palace of the Bishop of Ely, the church is the only surviving work of the reign of Edward I (1239-1307 in London.

Although rather dark, the church is very beautiful and atmospheric indoors; in particular, the stain glass windows being the striking feature. From a photographic perspective, St. Etheldreda’s is a challenging environment. Photographers use of tripod recommended but not absolutely essential. On my most recent wedding, I was able to capture some beautiful non-intrusive photographs of the marriage ceremony, entirely from the back of the church. The balcony also provides a great bird’s eye view. If you are planning to have group photographs, I would recommend if possible, an ‘alter return’, particularly for winter weddings. Suitable locations for group photography outdoors is very limited. However, Ely Place is characterful and suitable for informal black & white photographs. The Crypt is equally attractive and a suitable venue for wedding receptions/ dinner, with seating of up to 100 people.

In summary, St. Etheldreda’s church is a unique wedding venue, and a church I enjoy visiting. It has great character for wedding photography. London based, I am within easy access of St. Etheldreda’s Church, and have a varied portfolio of weddings covered at numerous London venues. Coincidentally, all the events Paul Martin has covered to date at St. Etheldreda’s Church, have been winter weddings!. Highlights of my most recent winter wedding appear below.
