Comments from Paul Martin:
John Wesley (1703-1791), one of the most influential personalities of the eighteenth century, is the founder of Methodism. He built Wesley’s Chapel as his London base.

Wesley’s Chapel is one of London’s undiscovered jewels. The Chapel was designed by the architect George Dance the Younger, surveyor to the City of London. It was built in 1778 by the builder Samuel Tooth, a class leader and local preacher. Known the world over as the Cathedral of World Methodism Wesley described his Chapel as ‘perfectly neat but not fine’.

Wesley’s Chapel is a unique church, given it’s rich heritage. The most striking features are the numerous stain glass windows depicting the life of christ. The pews are maintained in traditional wooden form, and there is an impressive crescent shaped balcony.

As a wedding location, Wesley’s Chapel has much to offer. I have photographed two weddings at Wesley’s Chapel. There is enough natural light spilling inside which enabled me to record some informal sequences of the marriage ceremony, with no intursion on proceedings. Outside, the door way and courtyard provides a suitable backdrop for group photographs as well as viable options for creative bride & groom portraits. There is also a small garden near the entrance where I was able to get some lovely portraits.

Wesley’s Chapel is a beautiful church and a great venue for weddings and memorable wedding photography. There are several venues situated nearby which are suitable for wedding receptions, such as The Honourable Artillery Company (opposite), Staple Inn and Butcher’s Hall.
